Staff spotlight: Jo Byrne
At Rae & Partners, our team is driven by passion and diverse experiences, and Jo Byrne, a Senior Associate in our Launceston office, is a shining example of that. Jo has been with us for nearly seven years, and her journey to the legal profession is truly noteworthy.
From florist to advocate
Before entering law, Jo spent 16 years as a florist, balancing a creative career with raising seven children. Despite her busy life, Jo’s desire to help the less fortunate access justice led her to pursue a law degree. She graduated with an LLB with Honours from Southern Cross University in Perth in 2017 and was admitted to practice later that year.
Jo’s achievements during her studies were extraordinary. She was named the National Indigenous Law Student of the Year in 2016 by the Federal Attorney General, and she received several academic excellence awards. Even more impressively, Jo completed her degree by distance education while raising the children and working. This dedication speaks volumes about her character, making her a perfect fit for Rae & Partners when she joined as a newly admitted solicitor in 2018.
Empathy and expertise in law
Jo’s legal work focuses on wills and estate settlements, where she helps clients navigate the complexities of legal matters during emotionally challenging times.
"Losing a loved one is difficult enough…I aim to make dealing with the estate as easy as possible for them."
Her life experience enduring a loss gives her a unique perspective in her work. Jo brings a compassionate yet practical approach to each case, ensuring her clients feel supported and informed.
In addition to estate law, Jo advises on commercial legal issues. She enjoys breaking down complex legal matters into plain English, ensuring her clients fully understand the advice they’re receiving. Her experience spans wills, estates, and commercial law, and she plays a key role in ensuring that Rae & Partners maintains its commitment to fairness and justice.
A day in Jo’s life
Jo’s days are varied, involving everything from client meetings to drafting legal documents. She emphasises the importance of clear communication and meticulous attention to detail to protect her clients and their interests.
Jo’s commitment to justice extends beyond her work at Rae & Partners. She volunteers with Motorcycling Tasmania and serves as a member on the law advisory committee at Southern Cross University. This committee advises the University on the direction it should be taking towards legal education. Outside of work, Jo’s passion for motorsports keeps her energised. An avid motocross and supercross fan, she brings the same enthusiasm to her hobbies as she does to her legal career.
For those looking to work with Jo, appointments can be made through her assistant, Susan. Jo also offers advice to aspiring lawyers:
"Be willing to listen to others and get a mentor."
Her own journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, learning, and dedication.
At Rae & Partners, we’re proud to have Jo Byrne as part of our team, where she brings her unique blend of empathy, experience, and passion to every case.
